TikTok has officially unveiled its "Press Pass" feature, a controversial but high-stakes move to curb misinformation while cementing its status as the world’s primary news source for under-30s. Under the new program, independent creators who meet strict transparency and fact-checking criteria are granted a "Verified Journalist" badge, giving their content priority in the algorithm during breaking news events.
The move comes after criticism regarding the platform's role in spreading unsourced rumors during recent global conflicts. To qualify, creators must undergo a three-month "Media Literacy Certification" and agree to third-party audits of their sources. Critics argue that TikTok is essentially becoming a centralized "state-style" editor, while proponents say it finally professionalizes the "citizen journalism" that has already taken over the app. With over 70% of Gen Z now getting their daily news exclusively via short-form video, the "Press Pass" represents a fundamental shift in editorial power from legacy institutions to individual creators.
